Saving Turte eggs

During July, there were some storm surges, confirming the danger they pose to sea turtle nesting.
If seawater floods a nest for more than 6 hours, the risk of losing the entire clutch can become extremely high (up to 70%).
Several studies show how important the choice of nesting site is: the shape of the beach, the duration of flooding and the characteristics of the waves profoundly influence the success of hatching.
This is why it is essential to thoroughly study the characteristics of our Tuscan coastline. Knowing the morphology of the beach and the marine weather data allows us to predict the risks and understand whether a nesting site is safe.
This also allows us to decide whether and where to move any nests laid in unsuitable locations, increasing the chances of survival for new generations of turtles.
Every nest saved is a small hope for the future of the species and the sea.
TartAmare’s operations are carried out in collaboration with the Coast Guard and often thanks to reports from citizens.
Every report is valuable.
