Dry stone walls: a key ecological niche 🪨
Dry stone walls: a vital ecological niche
The restoration of this wetland in the S. Antonio Forest was no coincidence: the area hosts numerous dry stone walls, true treasures of biodiversity.
🦎By retaining soil and moisture, these walls create the perfect habitat for the Italian cave salamander (Speleomantes italicus), an endemic amphibian of the Apennines now at risk of extinction due to habitat loss.
Rock fissures, damp crevices, and decaying logs provide the cool, humid shelters it needs to survive 🪵
Thanks to the wetland restoration supported by TEF – together with the presence of dry stone walls and fallen trees – this unique ecosystem can ensure a future for such a rare species.
