New Regional Wildlife Hunting Plan: what landowners need to know

Today we would like to share an important update regarding the new Regional Wildlife Hunting Plan (PFVR – Piano Faunistico Venatorio Regionale) and what it may mean for anyone who owns or manages land in Tuscany.

The new Plan was approved on July 30, 2026.

In Italy, hunters have the legal right to enter private land unless:

  • The land is enclosed by a fence
  • The land is within 100 meters of certain buildings and within 50 meters of railways and roads
  • Specialized crops are present on the land

If you own or manage land, you can now request the Region of Tuscany to exclude it from scheduled hunting management, without the need for fencing.

Under the regulations of the Region of Tuscany, the standard requests for excluding private land from hunting require a contiguous area of at least 200 hectares. This 200-hectare threshold does not necessarily have to belong to a single owner; it can be reached by combining adjoining properties of neighboring landowners or land managers who sign the request together. Conversely, land areas where experimental breeding and cultivation programs funded by public grants for scientific research and technological innovation are conducted may be excluded regardless.

In the absence of formal action, access will remain open to anyone legally engaged in hunting activities.

The Region has 60 days to communicate whether the request is accepted or rejected. If accepted, it remains valid for the entire duration of the PFVR (5 years).

30 DAYS TO ACT 

Starting from the publication of the PFVR in the BURT (Bollettino Ufficiale della Regione Toscana – Official Gazette of the Region of Tuscany), owners and managers will have 30 days to submit a reasoned request to the Region to exclude their land from scheduled hunting management.

Currently, publication is expected in early September 2026.

Exclusion is not automatic: requests are evaluated by the Region according to the criteria established by law and by the new Plan.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? If you own or manage land in Tuscany:

 

  1. GET INFORMED Verify if your land may be affected by the new Wildlife Hunting Plan.
  2. PREPARE THE REQUEST Send the form addressed to: PRESIDENTE DELLA REGIONE TOSCANA Via Di Novoli 26, 50127 Firenze via registered mail with return receipt (Raccomandata A/R) or certified email (PEC) to: regionetoscana@postacert.toscana.it
  3. DON’T MISS THE DEADLINE The 30-day period will run from the publication of the PFVR in the BURT.
