Phasing out polystyrene with local fishers 🌊
We are proud to support once again the Bluefishers project led by Marevivo, aimed at reducing polystyrene pollution by actively engaging fishers as allies in protecting our seas!
🐟 Italy holds a sad record: we are the European country that uses the most polystyrene in the fishing sector.
Around 50 million single-use fish boxes are used every year, among the most common waste items found at sea and along our coasts. Polystyrene breaks down into microplastics, harming biodiversity and entering the food chain, reaching humans through fish consumption.
With Bluefishers we want to change course: replacing polystyrene boxes with reusable containers, working alongside small-scale artisanal fishers to build a healthier future for the sea, coastal communities, and ourselves.
🎣Following the success in Viareggio—with 3,200 reusable boxes adopted by more than 120 local fishers—the initiative now continues in Marina di Carrara. Yesterday, during the press conference launching the project, 15 fishers from the Alta Marea Cooperative received over 500 reusable polypropylene boxes.
📰The press conference was a great opportunity to officially launch the project and gain visibility in major national publications — here’s the article by Corriere della Sera.
♻Reducing single-use is possible. The time to act is now.
