Bluefishers II
€ 9,000 awarded
Background
Building on the first pilot’s success in Viareggio, Bluefishers II is launched in Marina di Carrara to address marine pollution caused by disposable polystyrene boxes used in small-scale fishing. In facts, Italy holds a sad record: we are the European country that uses the most polystyrene in the fishing sector. Around 50 million single-use fish boxes are used every year, among the most common waste items found at sea and along our coasts. Polystyrene breaks down into microplastics, harming biodiversity and entering the food chain, reaching humans through fish consumption.
The Project
Bluefishers II focuses on Marina di Carrara, where the Alta Marea fishing cooperative is replacing polystyrene with reusable and recyclable polypropylene boxes. Eleven artisanal boats (15 fishermen) have received 550 DuWo boxes, compliant with EU food-contact and sustainability standards. The project includes stakeholder engagement, distribution of boxes, awareness and monitoring activities.
Its long-term goal is to reduce polystyrene waste and support policy actions to eliminate its use in the fishing sector, working alongside small-scale artisanal fishers to build a healthier future for the sea, coastal communities, and ourselves.
